U.S. airlines are trimming schedules for fall 2026 as jet fuel costs climb, and the airline route changes are landing unevenly: some routes are disappearing, some are pausing for the winter, and a surprising number of brand-new international nonstops are launching anyway. For travelers departing Nashville, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and New York, the picture is mixed. You may have fewer choices on a Tuesday afternoon. You may also have a nonstop to Guadalajara, Riyadh or Cartagena that did not exist a year ago. ### Why airlines are cutting flights this fall Fuel is the headline. Jet fuel rose from just over $2 a gallon at the start of 2026 to about $4.50 a gallon by late September, according to Marketplace, and airfares rose 23% in August. The spike traces back to conflict in the Middle East, including strikes on Saudi oil infrastructure that pushed crude above $100 a barrel, Airways Magazine reported. The big carriers have been frank about the math. American Airlines told investors at a Morgan Stanley conference on Sept. 16 that each one-cent increase per gallon costs it roughly $10 million, adding up to about $1 billion in extra fourth-quarter expenses. "If fuel prices remain as high as they are right now, I think that that's going to require some adjustments," American CEO Robert Isom said, as reported by the Daily Herald. United, which expects about $6 billion in added fuel costs for 2026, will skip some December flights it had planned and has signaled more cuts into early 2027 if prices hold. "We are not flying to maximize market share. We're flying to maximize profitability and free cash generation," United CFO Michael Leskinen said. Southwest has halved its planned 2026 capacity growth from its original 2% to 3% target. What gets cut first? Analysts point to off-peak flying: mid-day and midweek departures, plus routes that were only modestly profitable when fuel was cheaper. As industry analyst Robert W. Mann Jr. [told Marketplace](https://www.marketplace.org/story/2026/09/21/airlines-trim-routes-as-fuel-prices-soar), "Routes that were reasonably profitable...simply cannot be flown profitably at these higher prices." ### Route cuts and seasonal pauses to know Airlines have not published a complete list of fall reductions; much of the trimming shows up as fewer daily frequencies rather than routes vanishing outright. These are the confirmed changes affecting our five cities. #### New York - Delta ends LaGuardia to Tulsa on Nov. 6 and New York-JFK to Milwaukee on Dec. 18, according to The Bulkhead Seat. - Delta's winter schedule, as reported in May by Aviation A2Z, pauses several JFK leisure routes to Europe: Athens and Catania (Sicily) from Jan. 4 to March 7, 2027, and Venice from Jan. 2 to March 7. JFK to Buenos Aires pauses Oct. 25 to Nov. 10, and JFK to Dakar drops from four to three weekly flights starting March 7. - Air Canada paused JFK service to Toronto and Montreal this summer, with both slated to resume Oct. 25, 2026, Newsweek reported. #### Atlanta Delta's Atlanta hub keeps most of its long-haul network, but several routes take a winter break, per the same winter schedule: Dublin (Jan. 3 to Feb. 27, 2027), Brussels (Jan. 4 to March 8) and Buenos Aires (Oct. 24 to Nov. 10). Madrid drops to three weekly flights from Jan. 4 to Feb. 19. There is good news mixed in. Atlanta to Rome increases from seven to 10 weekly flights from Jan. 8 to March 6, and Atlanta to Santiago, Chile, grows from 10 to 14 weekly flights in late January. #### Chicago Both American and United are headquartered in the Chicago area, and both have trimmed O'Hare flying this year. United's earlier 5% schedule reduction for the second and third quarters specifically included O'Hare, [according to the Daily Herald](https://www.dailyherald.com/20260917/business/united-american-say-fuel-cost-surge-may-mean-capacity-cuts/). Expect the thinning to show up as fewer frequencies on domestic routes rather than lost destinations. #### Washington, D.C. American dropped its Los Angeles to Washington Dulles route in late summer as part of a round of fuel-driven cuts, Newsweek reported. Other D.C.-area reductions so far have come as frequency trims rather than full route exits. #### Nashville No confirmed route eliminations at Nashville International Airport had been announced as of late September, though BNA travelers are still exposed to the systemwide trims American, United and Southwest have described. Many of these routes were planned long before fuel spiked, and carriers are largely keeping them. #### Nashville: a new link to Mexico Mexican carrier Volaris launches nonstop service between Nashville and [Guadalajara on Oct. 15, 2026](https://lawaltravel.com/blog/where-to-visit-in-mexico), flying three times weekly on an Airbus A321, the Nashville Post reported. "Volaris' arrival in Nashville marks an important milestone in the expansion of our international service," said Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. The route joins international additions from earlier this year: Southwest's nonstops to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and San José, Costa Rica (both launched March 7), and Porter Airlines' service to Toronto's downtown Billy Bishop airport (launched May 11). #### Atlanta: Saudi Arabia and Guadalajara Delta begins Atlanta to Riyadh on Oct. 23, 2026, the first nonstop U.S.-Saudi Arabia service flown by an American airline. Flights run daily through Oct. 30 on an Airbus A350-900, then settle into three weekly departures. Delta has advised travelers to verify entry requirements, visa rules and local laws through official Saudi sources before booking, a sensible reminder given the ongoing regional conflict. Volaris also moved up its Atlanta to Guadalajara launch from December to Oct. 1, putting it in direct competition with Delta on that route. #### Washington, D.C.: beach season and the south of France Dulles has one of the more interesting pipelines of any East Coast airport: - Guadalajara on Volaris, starting Oct. 1, 2026 - Cabo San Lucas on United, starting Oct. 25, four times weekly - Liberia, Costa Rica, on United, starting Dec. 17, daily and seasonal - Cartagena, Colombia, on United, starting Dec. 17, four times weekly (rising to five in spring) - Toulouse, France, on United, starting April 26, 2027, daily on the new Airbus A321XLR - Milan, Italy, on United, starting May 28, 2027, three times weekly Those join EVA Air's first-ever Taipei service and Air Premia's Seoul flights, both launched at Dulles earlier this year. #### Chicago: Tokyo and Maui American launches O'Hare to Tokyo Narita on March 27, 2027, flying daily on a Boeing 787-9 with 30 Flagship Business and 21 Premium Economy seats. The route connects with partner Japan Airlines for onward travel across Asia. Closer to home, American starts seasonal O'Hare to Kahului, Maui, on Dec. 17, 2026, on a Boeing 787-8. Chicago also gained EgyptAir nonstops to Cairo in June, three times weekly on an Airbus A350-900. #### New York: Newark's European expansion United called its August announcement the largest international expansion in its history, and Newark is the centerpiece. Eight new Newark routes launch in spring and summer 2027: Luxembourg (April 2), Ljubljana, Slovenia (May 12), Olbia, Sardinia (May 27), Catania, Sicily (May 28), Ibiza (May 31), Valencia, Spain (June 2), Marseille (June 4) and Terceira in Portugal's Azores (June 9). "We offer the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific and Newark is the best Atlantic gateway in the country," United CEO Scott Kirby said. At JFK, Delta upgrades Zurich to daily service on March 8, 2027, and brings back Catania, Porto, Prague and Copenhagen earlier in the year, with Copenhagen flying daily. American plans to resume JFK to Tel Aviv in late March 2027. ### How to protect your fall and winter trips Schedule changes are the quiet risk in a season like this one. A few habits help: - Book off-peak flights with open eyes. Midweek and mid-day departures are the likeliest to be consolidated. If your meeting or cruise departure cannot move, favor a flight earlier in the day and a route with multiple daily frequencies. - Read every schedule-change email. A retimed flight can quietly break a connection. If the change is significant, you are typically entitled to rebook or request a refund; check the airline's policy and the U.S. Department of Transportation's refund rules. - Treat new routes as a gift, and verify them. Launch dates and frequencies can shift before a first departure, so confirm your flight a few weeks out. - Watch the price of waiting. With fares already up sharply, holding out for a deal on holiday or early 2027 travel may cost more than it saves. ### The bottom line This fall, the route map is being redrawn from both directions at once. Fuel costs are squeezing out the marginal Tuesday flight, while carriers keep placing long-range bets on Guadalajara, Riyadh, Tokyo and the Mediterranean.
